How to Repair a Water Damaged Phone?

   What to do if your iPhone falls into water? Water damage tends to worsen over time, and it's one of the more challenging DIY repairs. Don't panic, Phonefix will teach you how to repair a water-infested iPhone.


1. Immediately remove the iPhone from the water and turn it off.

   The longer your phone is submerged in water, the easier it is to short out. Press and hold the power button, and when prompted, slide the button on the screen to the right. The sooner you shut down, the better the chances of your iPhone recovering.

   If the screen is off and you're not sure if the phone is still on, you can quickly press the power key to see if the screen lights up. If it's on, go ahead and try closing it. If not, do nothing and continue to the next step.


2. Take off the phone case, take out the SIM card and the bracket.

   If you have a case on the outside of your iPhone, there may be water trapped inside, and it's best to take it off.

  Insert a SIM eject tool or paperclip in the hole in the iPhone SIM card tray. Push to eject the tray and remove it from the phone. Check to see if any LCIs have turned red to look for evidence of local water intrusion. If it turns red, go to the next step.

3. Check whether the cell phone battery is damaged by water.

  Remove the screws under the iPhone and use a suction cup to remove the phone cover. Remove the battery with a Phillips screwdriver or other flat tool, inspect the battery for damage or swelling, and replace it with a new iPhone battery if so.

4. Check the logic board.

   Remove the iPhone logic board from the plastic bracket, inspect the logic board and any connectors for signs of corrosion, if so, soak the logic board in 97% isopropyl alcohol until all visible water spots are loose take off.

5. Remove water stains with a brush.

  Use a soft bristle brush to remove visible water stains, be sure to clean all contacts and interfaces. Brush the chip on the logic board. It can be cleaned again if necessary. Wait until the logic board is completely dry before reassembling. If it's still a little wet, it can cause more serious damage when powered on.

  If all is well, reassemble the iPhone. If you're sure your phone is dry, you can try turning it on, and the phone might be able to work again. In case of other problems, it is recommended to seek professional help.
