PHONEFIX Repair Guide: Fix "Face ID Not Available" on iPhone 11 Pro Max
For iPhone X and later models, after the device is soaked in water, it is very likely that the face recognition will be damaged. Of course, improper operation during maintenance may also cause damage to the face components, resulting in failure of face recognition. Next, let's learn together how to fix iPhone 11 Pro Max Face ID not working.
Step 1
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID. When you try to set up the Face ID feature, you will receive a "Face ID is not available, please try again later" message.
Open the camera app, switch to the front camera, and turn on portrait mode. Natural light is still available when the phone detects a face, and the dot matrix camera still flashes.
Normally, when portrait mode is ready, the natural light button will turn yellow and the dot camera will flash.
Step 2
Let's check the Face ID module first. Disassemble the phone and remove the motherboard.
Check the earpiece, speaker, and transducer cables to make sure they are not damaged. The dot matrix camera cable, Infrared Camera Cable and front camera cable are also not damaged.
Step 3
Let's turn our attention to the motherboard. Clean the main board with board washing water, and then measure the resistance of the earpiece, speaker and dot matrix camera base.
Measure the resistance value of the base of the infrared camera. Judging by the resistance value, there is an open circuit on the 8th pin, and the normal resistance value should be around 260.
Step 4
The 1.8V voltage output from the power management module reaches the 8th pin of the infrared camera base through the inductor in the red circle in the figure.
Looking at the components on this circuit, we can see that an inductor is broken here.
At this point, we can preliminarily judge the cause of the failure: the user improperly disconnected the screen cable during the process of replacing the screen, which damaged the inductor.
Step 5
Now let's put a new inductor on it.
First remove the surrounding black glue. Then apply some medium temperature tin to the base. With the help of a soldering iron, tin the base with Solder Paste at 365°C. When finished, wash with plate wash water.
Apply some rosin to the base. We can see that the damaged inductance is very small. And replacement inductors are hard to find.
We can solder a zero ohm resistor in place of this inductor. Put the resistors in the correct places. Solder with a Hot Air Gun at 330°C, and the air volume is 1 gear. After the welding is completed, wash it with board washing water.
Measure the resistance of the 8th pin of the infrared camera base again, 257, it is normal.
Step 6
Now we can assemble the machine and test it.
Open the camera app, when the phone detects a face, the natural light button will turn yellow and the dot matrix sensor will flash.
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set Up Face ID, Face ID can be set up successfully. The phone is now ready for normal use.
The above is the iPhone 11 Pro max Face ID repair process, I hope it can help everyone, if you have other better ways, and comment us below, Phonefix is happy to try for everyone.
