iPhone Repair Soldering Paste Selection and Usage Considerations

Solder paste plays a vital role in Mobile Phone Repair and is a very important material. It is generally deposited on the pad by printing or dripping. After the components are mounted, they are positioned by the adhesion of the Solder Paste and soldered on the required pads by a reflow furnace to complete the required electrical and mechanical connections.


At present, there are many solder pastes of various grades and brands. Therefore, how to choose the right solder paste, that is, how to evaluate the performance of the solder paste in all aspects, has become a problem that we have to consider when repairing mobile phones.

For various solder pastes, their basic components include alloy powder, flux, and other additives. Although the components are roughly the same, the different purposes of use when designing solder pastes result in different application ranges of various solder pastes.

Classification of solder paste:

When choosing solder paste for mobile phone motherboard repair, you need to consider the requirements of the task, such as the type of welding, because there are many types of solder paste, which can generally be simply divided into the following four types.

1. Classification by melting point of alloy solder powder:

  • Common solder paste: melting point is 179 ~ 183°C.
  • High temperature solder paste: melting point is above 250C.
  • Low temperature solder paste: melting point is below 150C.

2. Classification by flux activity:

  • Inactive (ie R type) solder paste.
  • Medium active (ie RMA type) solder paste.
  • Active (ie RA type) solder paste.

3. Classification by solder paste viscosity:

According to the different requirements of solder paste coating process, choose solder paste with different viscosity. The viscosity range is usually 100~ 800Pa's, and the highest can reach 1400Pa's.

4. Classification by cleaning method:

  • Organic solvent cleaning solder paste.
  • Water cleaning solder paste.
  • Semi-water cleaning solder paste
  • No-cleaning solder paste

Selection of solder paste:

The selection of solder paste for products should be based on the conditions and usage requirements of the products, and then selected according to the performance of the solder paste. The following are some reference opinions for selecting solder paste.

  1. The activity of solder paste: It can be determined according to the storage time of PCB and components, as well as the degree of surface oxidation.
  2. Select solder pastes of different viscosities according to different paste application processes.
  3. Use spherical and fine-grained solder pastes for fine pitch printing.
  4. When double-sided reflow soldering, use high melting point solder paste on the first side and low melting point solder paste on the second side to ensure that the melting point difference between the two is 30~40C to prevent the components that have been soldered on the first side from falling off.
  5. When soldering thermistors, use low melting point solder paste containing bismuth.
  6. For the no-clean process, use solder paste that does not contain chloride ions or other highly corrosive compounds. For the water cleaning process, use water to clean the solder paste, and then use pure water or deionized water to clean the residue and dry it.

Notes on solder paste:

  1. Solder paste is usually packed in a wide-mouth bottle and sealed in a refrigerator at 2~5C. The storage life is 3~6 months.
  2. Before use, the solder paste taken out of the refrigerator should be placed at room temperature for about 2 hours, and then unsealed to allow it to balance with the room temperature. If it is unsealed at low temperature, it is easy to absorb moisture, and solder balls or solder splashes will be produced during welding.
  3. When using, stir the solder paste gently for about 2 minutes and always keep the cover on.
  4. After use, it still needs to be sealed and stored at low temperature to prevent the volatile components of the flux in the solder paste from gradually decreasing, increasing the viscosity, and changing related properties.
  5. Scrape back the excess solder paste from the screen and stencil, do not mix it with unused new solder paste, and store it in another container. If it is not invalid, add solvent and use it in the production of products with lower requirements.
  6. The humidity and temperature of the environment for applying solder paste should not be too high to prevent the solder paste from absorbing moisture and the solvent from volatilizing, which will make the solder paste printability worse. Generally, the relative humidity should be less than 60%, and the room temperature should be between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius.


After understanding the classification, selection and precautions of the above solder pastes, I will introduce several solder pastes mainly used for repairing mobile phones.
